…Barely
3 weeks after its inauguration, company launches in two more cities…
StarTimes Media Kenya, a digital Pay
TV company that recently launched its services in Nairobi and Kisumu has swiftly
moved to extend its reach in Mombasa and its environs. This becomes the third
region where the company has officially opened its doors to the members of the
public as it eyes to be in seven major towns by the end of 2012 to provide
digital television service ahead of the anticipated switch over from analogue
to the digital television platform being spear headed by the government.
Speaking at the launch,
the chief guest Assistant Minister for Environment and Natural Resources Hon. R.S
Kajembe acknowledged the positive impact that the StarTimes investment in the
region will have to the people of Mombasa saying it will up lift the lives of
the people in the region.
“The launch of StarTimes
in Mombasa signals continued investor confidence in this country and this
region in particular. This clearly shows our great potential and promises even
better opportunities for our people, I understand StarTimes is eyeing up to 300
employees in the country by the end of this year and am happy that part of this
team will be drawn from this region thereby indicating improved lifestyles
socially and professionally for our people” said Hon. Kajembe.
The company has embarked
on an aggressive regional expansion plan aimed at providing digital television
service to a majority of Kenyans in different parts of the country who have
previously been left out of this service as the cost has been largely out of
their reach.
“We are being driven by
our belief that it is not a privilege but a right for every household in this
country to enjoy the benefits of digital television. Previously, this has been
a preserve of a few but the entry of StarTimes will turn this around by
ensuring we provide world class television content at costs that are not only
pocket friendly but also offer value for money. With our fair pricing, our goal
is not just to attract, but also maintain our customers” said StarTimes Chief
Executive Officer Mr. Leo Lee.
The company which plans to
employ over 1,000 Kenyan staff members by 2015, has braced for a fight for the
largely un tapped digital television market with the introduction of not only
home entertainment but also mobile television through mobile TV, Car TV and
portable TV at the most competitive rates in the market.
Buoyed by the most
comprehensive inclusion of all the free to air channels currently
available on analogue in Kenya which are now available on digital technology in
all the StarTimes packages and an enviable composition of over 120
world class international channels, StarTimes is keen to get this to every
house hold in the country as the company currently offers the most affordable
initial joining fee at just Ksh 2,999 complemented by the most affordable
subscription starting from Ksh 499.
With
the strength of over 7 million subscribers in China, the company has launched
operations in nine other African countries including Guinea, Nigeria, Tanzania,
Uganda, Burundi, Central Africa and now Kenya among others and in the process
gaining over 1.4 million subscribers.
