Donation worth over Kshs1.1 million to benefit
youngsters through training in steel fabrication

Belgium has donated Kshs1.1 million worth of welding equipment to the Kenya Red
Cross Ukunda Branch office.
The pallet of welding equipment weighing over 400
kilograms will benefit over 200 less fortunate youngsters / volunteers in
Ukunda through training on how to make steel doors and windows.
The donation is the latest intervention in a number of
initiatives that DHL Belgium is engaged in following a long standing
partnership between the company and Kenya Red Cross, Ukunda Branch Office at
the Coast.
Speaking during the handover ceremony held at the
Kenya Red Cross, Ukunda, DHL’s Mr.
Eddy Van UytseI from Belgium said the company was committed to
supporting causes that positively transform the living standards of the local
population.
“At DHL, we believe in empowering communities through
initiatives that change their lives for the better. It is our belief that this
equipment will go a long way in nurturing economically beneficial skills among
these youngsters,” he said.
Other projects supported by the company include
setting up of a tailoring school in Ganja la Simba between Ukunda and
Msambweni, installation of water tanks in Vanga village, delivery of hospital
material in the Kwale District Hospital, donation of dairy cows, delivery of
laptops and installation of energy powered water pumps. All these projects have
been done in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross Society, Kwale Branch,
Ukunda.

Society Kwale Branch, Ukunda highlighted that “DHL’s support to our projects
has been invaluable. Thanks to their support we have been able to reach 1000
beneficiaries; and drive projects in improving living standard of the
surrounding community. The laptops donated have simplifed data gathering and
reporting in our office. The water tank project has benefited more than 500
people in Vanga location by providing clean water to the community. The Vanga
community tend to collect domestic water from shallow wells and rivers,
The tanks also help in reducing water related disease which was prone to the
area.
DHL as a company is widely involved in sustainability
and corporate social responsibility projects cutting across various sectors
worldwide.
Locally, the company has established a partnership with
SOS Children’s Villages where it gives support in both cash and provides
skills, knowledge and professional development training and opportunities. DHL
is also involved globally in fostering education through its Go Teach
Programme.
Other areas of corporate responsibility include
environmental protection and disaster management initiatives.
