Five Years of Research
and Development Results in World’s First and Only Lactic Acid Ferment
Extract-Based Organic Filter for Freshness and Hygiene
Clothes are regularly
washed and dry-cleaned, and homes and offices are regularly vacuumed. People
understand the importance of hygiene. However, little attention is paid to the
hygienic state of their refrigerators. LG Electronics (LG) aims to reinvent the
concept of food hygiene and elevate consumer lifestyles with its ambitious new
health-conscious refrigerator. LG’s new top freezer automatically cleans and
purifies its internal air via the innovative Hygiene Fresh feature, which
ensures that the air inside is kept fresh and hygienic.
“LG had prioritized health and hygiene in its home appliance
solutions well before the trend toward health-conscious products emerged on a
global scale,” said Young-ha Lee, President and CEO of LG Electronics Home
Appliance Company. “The launch of LG’s new top freezer is the culmination of a
long process of research and development. This process has enabled LG to
provide an air purification system specifically optimized for refrigerators.”
The Lactic Acid Ferment Extract-Based Filter: an Idea
Born from a Cup of Coffee
Refrigeration is used to prevent bacteria and germs from
growing on food, but many people do not realize that bacteria can also form
inside a refrigerator. This means that refrigerators need to be regularly
cleaned and aired like any other appliances. To save consumers the trouble, LG
has come up with Hygiene Fresh, a four-stage filtering system with a fan that
actively sucks in contaminated air from the refrigerator and sends it through
the powerful filters.
LG researchers focused on a new, novel idea to filter air
effectively. Taking an organic, food-based approach, their research eventually
resulted in LG’s patented microbial lactic acid ferment extract-based natural
filters. These filters create a superior sterilizing and deodorizing performance
which protects health by filtering fungi spores, and eliminating 99.9 percent1
of harmful bacteria that could cause food poisoning or colitis.
“One morning, I left my cup of café au lait to sit until a
thin layer of milk skin formed on top. That’s when I suddenly thought of lactic
acid ferment extracts,” said Eun-jung Kim, Head Researcher at LG Electronics
Home Appliance Company Refrigerator Laboratory, when asked how the team came up
with the original idea for filters with lactic acid ferment extracts.
Lactic acid is a well-known well-being substance globally
consumed in foods like yogurt and cheese, and is abundantly found in
traditional Korean foods as well.
The outstanding sterilization performance of LG’s Hygiene
Fresh was verified by the Kitasato Research Center of Environmental Science, a
prestigious test and research facility in Japan.
A Filter and Fan Configuration to Optimize Air Purity
The filters of Hygiene Fresh are coated with a layer of
lactic acid ferment extracts, enabling a purifying process that is both organic
and safe. By comparison, many rival manufacturers use plasma to enhance
hygiene, which emits ozone gases and can also have noxious effects on the human
body. Other hygiene-advanced designs have utilized electronic and chemical approaches.
However, none have achieved the eco-friendly characteristics that Hygiene Fresh
boasts. Because they are organic, LG’s filters are ozone gas free.
The secret behind the exceptional performance of Hygiene
Fresh lies in the harmony of its components. The powerful fan serves two
functions: it sucks in the interior air of the refrigerator and sends it to the
filters, and it also cools the air, further optimizing the filtering process.
The three filters and one deodorizer layer each have a unique function that is
essential in the purifying process. According to Yun-soo Kim, Head Supervisor
of SE Department, “After research and comprehensive testing, the four-layer
configuration proved to be the most suitable configuration for refrigerators.”
No other refrigerator to date has displayed such advanced internal air
purification.
The new LG top freezer provides an ideal solution for
fresher, more hygienic, and more natural food storage. It virtually eliminates
the need for regular cleaning, and it alleviates any stress over bacterial
growth, particularly in the warm summer months. The refrigerator also comes
with enhanced cooling functions such as the Door Cooling feature, as well as an
expanded capacity thanks to the Slim Water Dispenser and Detachable Ice Maker.
The new top freezer will be launched in September of this
year, in the Middle East and Africa region.
